Dr Wendy Sargent: Internal Report to BKWSU.

Chatting about Wendy's report...

Dr Wendy Sargent, a long time, dedicated, highly intelligent and effective BK, who kept a low profile.

Australian Sociologist Dr Wendy Sargent (1955-2011) was appointed by BK leadership in 2008 to research and present the 'real  history' of the BKWSU, following discoveries of original documents from Om Mandli in the British Library. It was called The Archive Project, because the intention was to 'archive' Dr Wendy's findings, and have them accessible strictly on a 'need to know' basis! 😥Fortunately old time BKs ensured the true story was made available, on this site and elsewhere, to Brahma Kumaris stakeholders.. The discovery of original BKWSU documents in the British Library in 2007,  show that the core BK  foundation story has been substantially reworked. British Library documents were made available to Wendy, and she did considerable  further research, especially through interviews. Dr Wendy was a thoughtful and  conservative BK, who dedicated her life to the organisation, and made a significant contribution to BKWSU service worldwide.

Wendy's 2010 internal  report to the BKWSU  has been largely ignored by leadership in spite of her appeal to them that 'decisions will need to be made as how to deal with the factual discrepancies in present BK books, DVD's and so on'.+ DR WENDY RESEARCH!

However, Wendy then goes on to defend censorship of murlis, saying that certain aspects are 'no longer perceived by the BK Seniors as serviceable,'  and noting that 'Dada Lekhraj attained his state of perfection in 1969 so he became a perfect medium for the murli. The murli since that time should not contain errors, unless they have been mistranslated or mistranscribed'.

If indeed Dada had become a 'perfect medium', one wonders why the murlis, especially those from 1969-1976 GOD + 'FINAL' DATES have needed to be censored by the university, or 'revised', the preferred euphemism.

Further, while rightly presenting the BK position of the Karachi period as collected in 'Is This Justice?(1939) which documents much of the anti feeling from the citizens of Sindh, the physical brutality to the girls and the self serving political manipulation that went on in Karachi, Wendy steers clear of giving any credence to the book 'A Reply to Is This Justice'(1940) which stated the anti Om Mandli group's deeply held convictions.

As she says quoting from the first Bhaibund Committee Report, the ‘Om Mandli Bhaibund Committee Report’  of November 1938 the perceptions of the anti-party are outlined. Some of the perceptions are:

'The founder of the Mandli, Bhai Lekhraj (…aged 54), is a master hypnotist,…with his powerful gaze, thrown from his, and his female disciples’ magic laden eyes, hypnotises youthful women, and when they are completely under his sway, he sports with them plays Krishna Lila, makes them dance, rocks them in swings, exchanges with them morsels of food, embraces them, lies with them on the same cot, bathes [swims] with them in the same tank – in short outrages all cannons of decency….” (Bharwani 1938: 3-4)

Dr Wendy comments:'In this quote we see the nature of the problem faced by Om Mandli. The very things which were actually signals of the incarnation of God, and the revelation of Brahma as Krishna, were aspects in Dada Lekraj’s behaviour that upset the leaders of the Hyderabad community most. Baba had such a strong power coming through him that souls immediately had such deep experiences and were attracted by the spiritual power they could feel in his presence. Although consciousness of Shiv Baba’s influence was not there, still the Om Mandli members could sense some very attractive power and influence. However, for people outside Om Mandli, the behaviour and attraction of the members was a total mystery, and so they interpreted the behaviour in another manner'.

This does sound like a justification for behaviour that understandably upset the families, individuals and panchayats throughout Sindh. It is surely an academic guess to say the unusual behaviour of a middle aged man and a group of teenage girls and women  were 'actually signals of the incarnation of God' when  according to documents, Om Mandli universally believed  that Prajapati God Brahma of Indian mythology had descended into Bhai Lekhraj in the 1930's, and not the one true God of all religions as believed some 30 years later.

Dr Wendy's otherwise generally accurate and precise summing up of the history goes like this:

'The foundational revelations occurred over the period of 1932 (we would say 1934) to 1969. They started in the 1930s with the belief in the incarnation of Krishna and Vishnu in Dada Lekhraj ( see *Note) then an understanding of the coming Golden Age, then knowledge of the coming destruction, then the understanding of the nature of the soul, then thinking that Brāhm(a) as God, is in everyone (Brahma here is not referring to Brahma Baba). Then in the 1940s new teachings came about including the nature and place of the soul world, then knowledge of dharamraj, then the understanding of the subtle regions and Avyakt Brahma.... Then late 40s and early 50s there was the revelation of the nature and role of Shiva.... Then in the 60s there was the revelation of the form of God and soul as a point of light. Finally in 1969, the role of Avyakt Brahma through the medium of Dadi Gulzar became the new drama after Dada Lekhraj left his body. (This sequence will be validated by sources in the next report).'

*Note from site moderator: Yes,In the very beginning it would appear the belief was that Krishna had incarnated in Bhai Lekhraj but soon the understanding came that Dada would be Krishna in his next birth, and that Prajapati God Brahma had incarnated in Dada. Dr Wendy concludes:

'From a factual perspective it took 37 years (1932 – 1969) for the main knowledge to be clearly revealed, and in the time line of the organisation, which is only 74 years old that is just less than half of our history. The posters demonstrate clearly that in the first 19 years of the yagya (1932-1949) although soul and drama was understood, there was no knowledge of God as we know'.

Actually Dr Wendy errs, as 'soul' was clearly not understood in the foundation years: to quote Om Radhe 'Each one of us is God', that is to say each individual soul is God was the belief. In conclusion, although BK leadership and officeholders occasionally pay lip service to Dr Wendy's findings, nothing has changed. The discredited BK  'history' book 'Adi Dev'+ADI DEV : WHAT ? continues to be promoted and distributed worldwide from London and Mt Abu, and www.brahmakumaris.org and other BK  websites still promote this discredited BK back story.
