Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, San Francisco, California.
Websites, newspapers and BK PR has told us for years that Dadi Janki had ‘the most stable mind in the world', and according to the
BKWSU website, this was shown to be by the 'Medical and Science Research Institute of the University of Texas’ in 1978.
It
has also been claimed on websites and elsewhere that such 'tests' never took place
However, we have spoken to western BK’s who attended the Langley Porter Psychiatric
institute at UC San Francisco in 1978, with Dadi Janki. They echo the experience below.
The late Dr Harold Streitfield, an early American BKWSU adherent, writes in his book “God's Plan : The Complete Guide to the Future” (Raja Press 1981):
‘Dadi
Janki made world tours in 1978 and 1979. In Melbourne, San Antonio and San Francisco she allowed herself to be tested on an EEG with the most startling results. In San Francisco I arranged and witnessed her testing. Her performance was unprecedented: constant
delta waves during wakefulness under all conditions. Delta is the slowest brain wave and and appears only during deep sleep. This unusual finding is open to various interpretations. To me it suggested that she had achieved constant soul-consciousness
since the soul detaches itself from the body in deep sleep.’
We heard recently from a senior western sister who was
present at the tests made on Dadi Janki ( though in 1980 she says, not 1978) . she writes:
'It was the doctors at Langley Porter who found that Dadi maintained Delta waves consistently
during any task: mathematical problem solving, or just normally being herself, or sleeping. These were the people who said that "this indicated that she seemed to have found a way to separate her consciousness from the brain stem". These were the
people who found this very extraordinary and as a result stated that she appeared to be "the most stable mind in the world.” I believe they had made this written statement to Harold Streitfeld, which he then communicated to us. These statements
did not originate in media reports. Following the tests done in California no mention was made to the media. I believe all mentions to the media were made in Texas not in California'.
Mention is made of the tests in Dadi Janki's book 'Companion of God', though BKWSU seemed to get the name of the institute wrong: it was apparently LPPI at UC, rather than MSRI at UT, which has led to some confusion and accusations
of deceit. Though maybe it was both, but BK aren't telling. And Harold aslso mentions EEG tests in Melbourne...?
Foe whatever reasons, BK London has dissociated itself from the claim, and sent a
‘cease and desist’ order to centres outside India, requesting 'the most stable mind' claim no longer be referenced in BK PR.
